The Nebraska Department of Economic Development (DED) has designated Central City as a Certified DED Leadership Development Community. Central City now joins Madison and Tecumseh.
Central City demonstrated strong leadership and commitment to community planning by identifying and formulating solutions to existing needs and potential opportunities. The City has implemented creative and successful initiatives for attracting businesses and developing new and rehabilitating existing housing. City officials also have relied on a wide variety of local funding sources to undertake business and community development projects.
DED kicked off the program in 2011 with the purpose of helping smaller Nebraska communities deal head-on with challenges and change. Communities must demonstrate having a solid planning and implementation process in place. Communities must also be actively taking advantage of technology or willing to learn in order to meet program objectives. The program’s framework provides communities with the necessary foundation for meeting challenges and readily adapting to changes.
Applicant communities are evaluated in the following areas:
Since earning the certifications in 2012 and 2011, respectively, Madison and Tecumseh have leveraged this added step to successfully apply for up to $380,000 Community Development Block Grant funding in the form of Downtown Revitalization grants, each.
The application process is ongoing so communities may apply at any time of the year.
