Dakota County Siouxland Family Center

dakotacounty_location_mapThe Siouxland Family Center is based upon the philosophy and principles of family support as well as best practices in early education, child development and childcare programming. The Siouxland Family Center has implemented a co-location, coordination and collaboration of services and programs within a single building. Programs and services are community based and culturally and socially sensitive to the families that are served.

Programming expands to family and adult education, workforce development opportunities and health and human services. The Community Center provides emergency assistance to individuals in the form of food, housing and utilities aid as well as translation services and relocation information. The ultimate goal is to provide a seamless holistic approach to the delivery system that meets the needs of children and families.

The Siouxland Family Center partners have developed and implemented a comprehensive early childhood education and care programming, coordinating these activities with family education and support. Wrap-around childcare and all-day programs are offered for children whose parents work and/or attend classes.

Childcare is designed to meet the needs of shift employment and includes infant through 12 years of age. Preschool is offered in five classrooms providing experiences for children with disabilities, those with limited English proficiency and children who are qualified due to income guidelines. A Bilingual Preschool program serves 60 children, a Head Start program works with 54 students, and a Total Communications Special Education program serves 25 students. In addition to classroom space (licensed for 200), the main floor houses a reception area, play area, dining, conference room, resource library and office space that will house Community College classrooms.

In the future, the second floor may be further developed to include clinics that can offer mental and physical screening and/or treatment, shot clinics and baby wellness checks. The Family Center currently provides a strong referral system to other agencies when appropriate. The local school system is collaborating with the Family Center to set up a program for teen mothers that will foster strong parenting skills and offer essential child development education.
