Looking for another way to create more jobs, Wayne (pop. 5,587) set out to purchase real estate for expansion of Sand Creek Post & Beam Company. With help from Wayne Area Economic Development, Nebraska Business Development Center, and Northeast Nebraska Economic Development District, the company sought and received $205,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding from the Nebraska Department of Economic Development to assist the expansion.
The company, which began in Wayne in 2005, has become a national corporation that offers authentically crafted post and beam traditional barn and outbuilding kits. The idea to apply for CDBG funds came when the company approached Wayne Area Economic Development to discuss potential resources for an expansion. After all potential partners were brought into the picture, the group discussed the proposal with city officials. Upon their acceptance, the project took a couple years to prepare, to ensure the company was ready for the expansion.
The project created nine full-time jobs, extended the original building by 2,200 square feet, and constructed an additional 9,020 square foot facility. The project also involved purchasing and remodeling a former bank building into the company’s headquarters.
Workers got to decorate their offices with various products offered by Sand Creek Post & Beam, which not only added personalized touches, but showcased the company’s fine products and materials.
“Sand Creek Post and Beam and its continued growth has had a profound positive impact on the community of Wayne,” said Wes Blecke, executive director with Wayne Area Economic Development. “The company and its employees are very active in the community and are always willing to assist with community-wide projects.”
